About Guoshan Han

Author of Reputation Capital Theory. Close to twenty-five years in public relations, corporate communications, and crisis response — in China, and on the other side of the language barrier.

Guoshan Han (Chinese name: Han Guoshan) is the author of Reputation Capital Theory. He is a communications strategist, screenwriter, and columnist. He holds an MSc in Management from the University of Greenwich in London and has spent close to twenty-five years in public relations, corporate communications, and crisis response.

He was a senior partner at one of China's leading 4A advertising agencies. His client work has ranged across state-owned enterprises, multinationals, local governments, NGOs, and individual public figures, in sectors from infrastructure and pharmaceuticals to tobacco and consumer goods.

Han was among the first practitioners in China to treat reputation as an asset to be measured rather than a story to be placed. That work produced Reputation Capital: The Hidden Logic of Word of Mouth, Traffic, and Popularity (Enterprise Management Publishing House, 2021; ISBN 978-7-5164-2378-3), the Chinese-language book from which the English volume grew. His essays and commentary have appeared in People's Daily (Overseas Edition), Sales & Marketing, and Enterprise Management.

Educated in Britain and now working between Beijing and Shanghai, he works in both directions at once: explaining China's media environment to international clients, and explaining international practice to Chinese ones.

THE ARGUMENT BEHIND THE THEORY

Why reputation had to be measured, not described

In twenty-five years of practice the same scene repeated: a client would ask whether a proposal was worth the money, and the honest answer was that nobody could say. Coverage could be counted, sentiment could be sampled, but neither could be compared with the number from last year, or with a rival, or with the alternative use of the same budget.

What was missing was not effort but a unit. The work of the following years went into constructing one that a practitioner could fill in on a Monday morning and a board could read without a translator.

The result is a five-factor index, published in Chinese in 2021 and developed since through client work rather than through the literature. It has been used on listed companies, pre-IPO groups, state-owned enterprises, local governments, and individual public figures — which is also the reason it is deliberately unglamorous: a model that has to survive a budget meeting cannot afford to be elegant.

The English edition, The Invisible Hand of Reputation, is the same argument rewritten for readers outside China, with the local cases replaced by the mechanism they illustrated.
